Childhood obesity within the United States is growing at an alarming rate. Type 2 diabetes (the type rarely diagnosed in children and that is often linked to obesity) has almost tripled in the last few years and the numbers are still growing. In 2005, in fact, 1.5 million Americans were diagnosed with diabetes, and that number is expected to increase by 20 to 30% in 2006.
These increased numbers aren't just among adults. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 13% of Americas youth/teens are overweight or obese, and this is more than double the number from two decades ago. Some experts blame TV, computer games, lack of safe playgrounds, unhealthy school meals, and the elimination or reduction of school recess time. Whatever the causes, the result has been a sharp increase in the number of overweight and obese children.
